Best External Hard Drive For Time Machine

What is the best way to use my external Hard Drive?
I have a mac with Snow Leopard installed and I want to know the best way to use my external hard drive. For now I have two hard drive partitions. One is called "Time Machine" that I use for Time Machine to save my computer, and is called "Data" that I store all my files. Is this the best way to use my external hard drive or is it an easier way?
It's about what works best for you. I have a mac snow leopard, and I think that Time Machine is a quite useless for my needs. I can understand why professionals would safeguard their systems with Time Machine, but personally, I want to manage all of my files. I keep movies and TV shows on my hard drive, so as I am not monopolize the space on my computer with them. I Also regular backups of my music, photos and documents by simply dragging the files into an organized storage system on my hard drive. Evil only way to save your data is not to do it at all!
