Camera Nightvision
nightvision and/or IR capable video cameras?
I need to order video cameras that are capable of recording personnel jumping out of airplanes at 1500 ft. in pitch black conditions, while I am on the ground recording. Price is no issue, but would prefer to not have the over-the-shoulder type cameras. Any help is greatly appreciated, and stats even more so(quality and distance capabilities).
Thanks rugratz, so IR is the type I need? And again, price is no issue, my command already knows it will be rather expensive. Just trying to find out anything I can, as most of the websites I have been to are not much help:D
Ok, I should clarify, I am in the Army, and am aware that this will be very expensive. I have proposed a couple FLIR systems, running around $65,000 and the bosses didn’t even bat an eyelash. All I really found were sights and binoculars through FLIR. They all had video capabilities, but not sure how I would need to actually record it.
Regular light at 1,500 feet away would be extremely difficult – at best. An infrared emitter array would be similar. Of course, in “pitch black”, acquiring that target would be pretty much impossible.
I *think* you have two options.
Rugratzzzzzzzzzzzzzz is on them…
1) The airplanes could carry the IR lights – but you will need LOTS of them. Mounted on the outside of the plane, pointed in the direction of the jumpers. I’d say this is a non-starter. Too many issues regarding safe/secure mounting and power availability. Then, the camcorder you use must be able to deal with seeing the IR spectrum. Chances are high you would need to remove the camcorder’s IR filter unless you go with a consumer-grade Sony that has “NightShot” mode.
2) There are military and law enforcement grade FLIR systems that amplify light a LOT and use only available light (even if we think it is “pitch black”). You can try surplus. They may not be available to civilians. Open your wallet REALLY REALLY wide. These will be very specialized imaging devices that you would not use in any sort of regular lighting conditions. You *might* be able to rent the gear somewhere… the manufacturer may be able to help.
