Another morning, another train to London for another Canon camera launch. This becomes something of a habit. Yet at least it is rather late in the day that I can avoid The morning commuter rush. A country boy I am, but that does not mean I like to feel like cattle on their way to market. Indeed, the journey this morning was quite pleasant.
It began, as many do, with a taxi at the station. We've all been there, sitting in the front passenger seat next to a stranger. You do not want to appear rude and spend the entire trip, Resolute silence but you know nothing about this person next to you, then how do you start the conversation? Inevitably, the same old chestnuts flow; "Are you just starting or get your shift? "Or" busy right now? "Failsafe or preferred every time the British public exhibition 'Is not this terrible time? "
This morning, however, the conversation was fluid From the moment the driver asked where I was. After explaining the reason for my trip to London, a long discussion followed on the state the camera market today. My chauffeur was obviously well informed. He asked if the increasing popularity and the quality of camera-phones had an effect on camera sales, so we talked about compact cameras versus camera-phones, SLRs by Report compact cameras, stills photography versus video, DVD versus hard disk recording and even Betamax and VHS. The conclusion we came to was that the most successful players in one of the electronics markets today were those who had able to adapt, and manufacturers who, rather than burying their heads in the sand and hoping that the latest developments in the world hi-tech pass them and leave their little corner untouched, embrace the new technologies on offer and incorporate them into their product portfolio. It is thought that I currently have in my head as the Suffolk countryside passes by outside the train window.
He can not deny; Canon are a success history. With other brands, they have not only excelled in the traditional film photography in the past, but have adapted to, and in many cases, has led the transition to a now almost entirely digital industry. However, it is also fair to say that it's been a while since Canon launched a reflex that has forced photographers to sit up and take note of what they do. This launch could be very important to them. I, Like many people, my suspicion that this new model might be, and if that is what we think it is, then it is a model was planned for some time by the existing Canon SLR users and those seeking to invest in an EOS system alike. So will it be what we think it is and, perhaps more importantly, demonstrate the ability to evolve with the Canon changing world digital photography?
If their HQ at Woodhatch is anything to go by, Canon is moving very well, thank you very much. The building which seems to be almost entirely of glass and wood, is itself awash technological advances. Solar panels on the roof can produce enough electricity to light 50 houses the computer and command window shutters open and close to maintain the internal temperature. Lighting suits according to levels of ambient light and turns off automatically if there is anyone in the region. In short, the house of Canon UK is a real feat technology. What better environment to launch their latest offering hi-tech?
After coffee and snacks prior, it is time to respond newcomers. It is of course the replacement for the Canon EOS now long-in-the-tooth slightly 5D. Despite the rumors, this is not the EOS 7D, but rather most directly appointed Canon EOS 5D Mark II .
With an astounding 21.1 megapixel resolution of the 5D Mk II is a massive 65% more than its predecessor. 21.1 million pixels. It almost 1 pixel for every person in Australia. Other significant improvements include a display screen of 3.0 ", 3.9 frames per second shooting, improved of the self-cleaning, Live View and increased range ISO (100 ISO-6400, expandable to ISO 50 to 25.600). In addition, the new Canon EOS 5D Mk II contains the latest Canon DiG! C 4 processor, the original 5D uses the DiG! 2 C.
It is hardly surprising that there are so many advances, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II has been long in coming! Keep in mind that at the time of its launch, the original 5D was the next top model of the EOS 20D. Since then, we had the 30D, 40D, 50D and more recently, including the Canon EOS 5D Mk II is now over.
However, without a doubt one of the bravest moves from Canon with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is the inclusion of a full HD 1920x1080p 30 fps video capture. If it works equally well in real life as it does on paper (we were not allowed to try at the launch), then it is more incredible machine remarkable. The movie mode is activated by pressing the "set" button in the center of the rear wheel control. Press once to register and again to stop; dead simple. But to avoid the movie mode is accidentally activated, it is necessary to activate the menu and it can be used with Live View.
When you play with, sorry, testing Canon's new toy, it becomes obvious that the Canon 5D Mark II is probably the most appropriate title for this new EOS. Thus it is similar to the original model that the use, it will be second nature to any owner 5D. Of course, there have been some changes minor in the arrangement of function keys, mainly to reflect new, and the Canon Mark II had the same seal upgrade the 50D has been given, but it still seems and feels like the original 5D. So much so, in fact, that people held at Canon tell me that the new version is exactly the same size and weight than the old model. I waited for 8.3 million extra pixels would have added something, but no, not a sausage.
Following hot on the heels of the Canon EOS 50D as it does, it comes as no great shock to find that the Canon 5D Mark II share many advances the camera. The weather and Live View have already been mentioned, but the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is the Quick Start menu available the 50D allows the user to change shooting settings with ease. Given the pro / semi-pro market that this device is intended at this facility may be more useful for the Canon 5D Mark II on the 50D.
It's something I noted the EOS 50D very for it is only fair that I mention it as a slight negative for the Canon 5D Mark II, but the difference is less stable spec-mate, the new Eos not share his predecessor range of accessories. Considering that the batteries from the 50D and battery grip with the 40D, the 5D owners original will find themselves having to replace the existing batteries and handles the EOS 5D Mk II takes the new LP-E6 battery and grip BG-E6.
I would be very loved taking pictures with Canon's new baby to include in this article, but unfortunately, it was ultimately impossible. No sooner had I taken the Compact Flash card from my pocket that I was almost jumped by several people and their research burly Canon Guy Pro Mike gave me a look usually only on principals and agents of the Victorian movement pre-menstrual. I put the card back in my pocket and separated gently.
However, Canon has retained the services of a professional photographer and writer, Damien Lovegrove. Weddings are a specialty of Damien and a studio session with a model that forces a wedding dress, Damien was able to showcase the EOS 5D MkII. One of the things was clearly taken by the image has been low levels of noise, it has been demonstrated superbly by shooting her in the standard model ISO 6400 in a dimly lit hallway. The level of detail and lack of noise in the shadows has been superb, but so I am authorized to draw some pictures to show you myself, you have to take my word for it.
Perhaps the most telling statement about this camera is present when the demonstration was over I approached Damien and ask some questions for him. Among other things on the Canon Mark II the ability EOS 5D for its field of photography (the answer was "very"), I asked Damien if the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II would be a good place for camera decline of professional photographers using 1D and 1Ds range of Canon cameras.
"No, he replied," It's better than that. "
High praise indeed.
