Nanny Color

HELP! I am a nanny of 5 kids ( 2 sets of parents share me) ages !yr, 2yr, 3yrs, 4yrs, and the oldest is 5yrs)
I 4yr old girl (1st born in her family) throws major fits everyday morning before getting ready for school. Yesterday she threw a fit because the 5yr old sat in her chair (which she was not sitting in to begin with) and threw a hissy fit because she thought he got the biggest cinnamon roll..they all come in the same size. Last week she threw a fit over underwear, wasnt the right color that she wanted to wear. Parents created a star board, this week if both girls ( 3yr old & 4yr old sisters) get a total of 8 stars (4 a piece) I would take the 3 oldest kids to the childrens’ haunted house thrursday or friday. the 3yr old ( so far) has her 4 stars…the 4yr old down to two. I believe the 4yr old shouldnt be able to go due to her throwing fits every morning/noon/or night. Any suggestions out here for parents/caregivers out here on what to do when she does this. We’ve taken princess dresses..etc.
Routine is very important when looking after children, children of all ages thrive on routine if there isn’t already one in place the put one in place get them to help you with let them have a few ideas make if a fun thing but also let them know it’s not a game that you are going to stick to it. Let them tell you simple things like what do they think should happen before school, What do they think should happen after school etc. Children like to be involved.
When she starts fitting is give her a warning! Come down to her level and say to her
(name I don’t like the way you are behaving right now I would like for you to stop that or I am going to put you on time out) Use a firm low tone authoritive voice (NOT YELLING) Yelling achieves NOTHING!
If she dosn’t calm down or do what you want her to do sit her on a designated spot for time out the length of time she has to stay there is 1 min per year of her her life ie 4 years is 4 minutes. Remember to use the same timeout spot each time you can cut out a circle from a coloured piece of cardboard use a different colour for each child and place them in places around the home where they are not going to get in the way but somewhere so they are on hand when you need them. If a child is on time out and comes off before their time is up tell them (I put you on time out cause you didn’t listen to me) and put the child back and time starts all over again. If they come off again put them back this time saying nothing at all and the time starts all over again. I know this sounds a bit mean but believe me it works it will take about a week and you will have a totally different child to work with.
Remember to praise her lots when you do catch her doing something good it will make her feel good and want to do more good things.
Keep the children entertained always have activities on hand for them even if it is just paper and pens or playdough. Get them working together as a team on something make it fun and get them to do it together. This could be a puzzel or a relay race or something be inventive.
Star charts are good but shouldn’t be used for long periods of time just a few weeks. I find tick charts are better with lists of jobs she has to do in a day ie brush teeth mainly things that she isn’t doing that you would like for her to do and if she does them give her a tick it makes doing things fun so they can see their ticks grow.
The other type of chart you can you make is a ladder and when she is good she moves up the ladder and when she isnt so good she moves down the ladder if she can get to the top of the ladder by the end of the week then she gets a treat and this dosn’t have to be a treat that costs money either something simple like a trip to the park or 15 mins extra t.v time
another idea is take something away from her when she is acting up something that is important to her preferably something with many pieces and each time she is good she gets a piece back just 1 piece at a time this works good with dolls houses you take the dolls and furniture of for boys car tracks and then give them back one piece at a time.
REMEMBER WHEN YOU ARE TALKING TO A CHILD COME DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL AN ADULT FEELS A BIT LIKE A GIANT TO A CHILD AND CAN BE A BIT FRIGHTENING!
BEST OF LUCK
