How to go about hooking up wireless in my room?
i have 2 computers in my room downstairs, neither of which have internet access. My family’s home computer which is available for everyon to use gets internet through a router which does allow wireless with the password. I am wondering if i buy a linksys router ( http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/sys/416358748.html ) if i can hook that up to my computers downstairs (still in range of the router upstairs) and get internet throught that or if the linksys router is only for sending out a signal. One more piece of information, i have a ps2 slim that i would also like to be able to go online with, could that be hooked up to a router as well? Or can you buy a wireless antenna for the ps2?
Yes, it is doable, but it would be hard to say with the specific router(s) in question. You will need an additional router to act as a client to that network and create a separate network behind that router (or better yet, you can bridge the connections if the second router supports it, and even better, use WDS).
Succinctly, yes you can do it, as long as the other router has the ability to run in client mode (I doubt that one can) and you don’t mind using network address translation. A dual AP configuration using tomato ( http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato ) or another linux based firmware would be alot more awesome though. Or just give everything a wireless NIC, whatever.
