Seagate External Hard Drive Noises

Hard Drive and enclosure?
Hi guys. To fix my problem, either you guys have to do some research or you guys have to be tech guys or something. If your answer is something as simple as “get a new hdd” or “try rebooting,” you might as well not post. Thanks.
I bought a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 (400 gigs) hard drive (ST3400633A if that helps) to use as an external hard drive with the enclosure ADS Tech USBX-833.
Here’s the problem.
I can transfer small files and such onto it, but once I start putting larger files, which take more time to transfer, the external hard drive (hard drive + enclosure) will make a strange noise and start freezing up.
It seems as if every time I try to do something that takes a long time it’ll freeze, including reformating, etc.
Any idea what the problem is?
I had problems with a hard drive and enclosure recently and it turned out that there were two main problems: 1. the usb cable that connects the drive to the pc wan’t working properly and 2.. the cables inside the drive enclosure itself were not making proper contact so i had to pull them out and put it back. Once this was done and once the usb cable was replaced the drive worked.
it could also be that either the drive or the enclosure is malfunctioning.
check the drive for errors using either chkdsk from the command prompt or go to my computer, right click on the drive, choose properties, go to the tools tab and click check now and see if you get any errors.
also you can go to the start menu, choose run, type in cmd and press enter, type “chkdsk /?” for the help which will sh0w you how to use this tool. if the disk is showing no errors get the enclosure checked out
