Volume Control

Volume Control?
How do i restore the volume control icon on my computer…because every time that i click on the box that reads ‘Place volume icon on the taskbar’ it says….That the volume control has not been installed and in order to install it that i need to use Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
So how wouldi go about doing that?
There are a few things you can try. First, you can uninstall the sound hardware. Click Start, then Control Panel, then System, then Hardware, then Click on the Device Manager button. Click on ‘Sound, Video, and Game controllers’. you want to delete everything except audio codec and video codec. To remove items, right click, and select Uninstall. If that choice doesn’t appear, just remove the others. Then, reboot your computer. The drivers for the sound hardware should automatically install after rebooting.
If this doesn’t fix it, you can try downloading the latest drivers. If you have a Dell, this is easy (www.dell.com), same for HP, Compaq, etc. If you have a ‘clone’, you’ll need to find out what motherboard you have. If you actually have a sound card instead of onboard sound, you’ll need the exact number. It is CRITICAL you install the drivers for your hardware. Something close MIGHT work, but more than likely will crash your computer, or just not work.
If this doesn’t work, you can try running Dial-A-Fix. This program is one of the great secrets in the Computer Repair world. Just run it, and it will fix a lot of potential issues. Get it here: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
As a last resort, you can try doing a repair install of Windows. In this instance, you install windows over itself. It doesn’t wipe out any of your info, and your computer should look the same afterwards. It just ‘freshens up’ some files, and repairs some things. Just be sure to NOT tell it to format your drive, or install in a different directory.
