Western Digital External Hard Drive Circuit City

Why can not my computer recognize my external Hard Drive?
I recently bought a 500GB hard drive outside of Circuit City. It is Western Digital. He needs an adapter and a USB cable, both of which have been provided by the company in the box. I plugged the adapter into the outlet and connected the hard drive. Then I used the USB 2.0 high speed cable and connected it to the computer, with the small end into the external hard drive. My computer running Windows XP Professional recognizes the device connected, but does not appear in My Computer work. Please help me. All my work and family photos are in this player. Thank you.
Go to Computer Management (right click on My Computer, click Manage). Find disk management. You will see your external hard drive, where a long black bar, right click it and click Partition. Then, make sure it does not format. Make it the maximum size possible. Then it should show it to my computer, it can have your files in it. If it does not a recovery program that relates to how it is formatted (NTFS, FAT32, etc.). CAUTION: It is possible that you will not be able to recover data.
