Western Digital External Hard Drive Crashed
Concerned about the preservation of large files (500 + GB) Suggestions?
I have a Sony HD camera that records video in the UK, I therefore close to 450 GB of video files between my two pcs. (I am a video-a-holic) Anyway, I bought a hard disk external (1TB Western Digital) to save my computer area, but my friend told me that scared the external HD will crash and lose all my files. Hear Western Digital are the best, but what are the chances it will crash? How long should I wait to remove the files from my PC regularly? Are my files recoverable if the Hard Drive failure? Are there alternatives? IE online storage sites? DVD more than 4.7 GB? All suggestions are appreciated!
The truth is that one day all the hard drive will die. Some will die sooner than others. A good sign of a reliable player is when it has a warranty of three years. Personally, I prefer Seagate because of the way they are constructed. They also proved its reliability. Meanwhile, Maxtor, Western Digital and Hitachi drives are good as well. So get a good brand external 1TB hard drive. Put all your electronics into a surge protector, or better, an uninterruptible power supply (APC makes good). If you really need the ultimate in reliability of backup, you can get a round disk with RAID (Redundancy). When a disk of a RAID configuration fails, you can remove it, put a new drive, and retrieve data on the second disc. Formerly, people used to tape backup, but backup to tape in the skills you are looking expensive and mostly used in data centers today. online storage with you an incredible experience slow compared to USB 2.0 speeds, and store your company can go out of business (this was happened).
