How to setup external Hard Drive with my mac?

I bought me a 1tb external hard drive and when I plugged it into my mac osx laptop it said that “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer”. Then it gives me 3 options: Initialize, Eject, Ignore.
What can I do so it can read it and allow me to save stuff on it? Do I go to initialize? If so, what do I do after that?
What I have:
- Mac OSX 10.5.8
- 1TB External HD (Western Digital)
– Power Supply
– USB Cable
– Firewire Cable

Mac reads NTFS just fine, mac cannot write to NTFS – except Snow Leopard (10.6) which can read and write to NTFS.

If you are using the drive exclusively for mac, press the “Initialize” button and your good to go.

If your using it for windows and mac, go to “Applications” –> “Utilities” –> “Disk Utility” and format the drie with FAT32.
